Emma 3.0 Designs

Another issue for me is that the buttons at the bottom are “Pay” and “Emma Pro”, things that a lot of people won’t use on a daily basis. They are taking valuable space that could be used by more used features of the app. I much prefer the previous buttons with “Feed”, “Analytics”, “Accounts” and “More”

So many more clicks to see the information on the old app

I agree, The line graph of spending compared to last month, and also the contextual graphs above each of the categories (Cash, Debt, investments) is actually why I chose Emma over its competitors. The net worth one remains, i’m confused why the other 3 are gone.

The email says none of the features were removed but these are clearly gone. It’s not that the new analytics are bad, but they’ve removed useful ones, too :slightly_frowning_face:

Echoing the points about the disappearance of the line graph. I’d go so far as to say that was the most useful feature. Seeing graphs that show the trends over several months is helpful for tracking how the year is going. It would be useful to see that overlaid with previous years to see whether this month was better than the same month last year.

Hi there, I just upgraded to Emma 3.0 and I do not like the fact that you have hidden away the accounts tab and also prevented the line graphs for my current accounts/debts/loans/etc. Could you kindly please reinstate this? Thanks.

Interesting to see all the comments expressing disappointment at removal of the line graphs. I never found them useful so surprises me a bit.

So two obvious things strike me:
I used to get a clean view of current cash vs credit card so could quickly see my “balance” for the month. I think this has been echoed above.

I think I was also able to see the total of predicted / expected transactions for the rest of the month (all the direct debits and “subscriptions” yet to come out). This helped to give me a quick indication of what was yet to come out vs. what I have left in my account.

These were two easy snapshots that helped me see how I was doing cash-flow wise. Has it moved because I can’t find it - not easily anyway?

On the surface looks shiny and new… but definately looks a step back to me. Even from a design persective i’d prefer a more compact look. I am a previous premium subscriber (current pricing strategy is just ridiculous) so use the app a lot.

Home Screen

  • 2 of the 3 icons (arrow, refresh and +) are completlu unintuiative (why can i not refresh from the accounts page?)
  • Budgetting - i’m over budget - there is a little red x. Usually that means close the box.
  • 3 Bottom buttons(tabs). Obviosuly for Emma to push their own agenda. Is Pay really a most used feature? Upgrade (How many times are people using that? once in 100,000 times they use the app? Sort your pricing model and people might upgrade - not by slapping a big button on the home screen). Bring back analytics and accounts - thats why we use the app)
  • Can’t see all my accounts in 1 go now… have to go into Current, Saving, Debt all individually

Analytics

  • I found the graph useful - as pre others
  • Hows about some configuration options? Income vs spending takes up about 20% screen space - for me thats not important (appreciate it would be for others). I have to scroll a whole screen to get the actual analytics.

Overall this feels like a UI overall when we need a bit more UX. Emma has been one of my favourite Apps - I hope the Emma team take on the feedback coming in

Hi guys,

thanks a lot for the feedback.

I’ll try to wrap up some of the changes/reasons:

  • Graph lines: they were all off / unreadable and in the context of Emma, only savings made any sense, although we don’t support 50% of the savings account market; so for this reason we killed them.
  • Accounts are now hidden: the taps to see current accounts are the same. I think we can add a way to swipe between the sections, so we keep the interaction like before.
  • Accounts in one list: we never had this feature.
  • Cash vs credit card: true balance can do this very easily.
  • The separation between Analytics / Budgeting is an opportunity to add more features that I have listed above.

In terms of Emma agenda, we are trying to make the app simpler cause there are about 2,000 people downloading the app every day and we need to address a wider audience that doesn’t understand a lot of the complex features that we have built over the years as well as give space to the Invest tab that is coming.

For Pay, this is also another new focus that can have a huge impact on the future of the company (same for the Premium tab) in terms of retention, engagement, re-activation of churned users, and so on.

Hi,
The rolling budgets feature is great. Butit could be better if we have the option to enable the rolling budget for specific categories.

For exemple, I use the rolling budget for anual expenses, like mechanic, holiday, etc
But for others categories like groceries or housing, the rolling budget option will just mess with my spent tracking.

Is it possible to make this feature for specific categories?

Best regards,
J.S.

I loved Emma so much, it was the best app I’d ever had… until this morning. When I awoke to some bright white and purple car crash of cluttered icons!? Where has the graph over time gone?? That was the most useful feature, it was really clear to see how your balance changes over time, as well as having the balance of all your bank accounts in one place. Now there’s nothing similar. also little things like the removal of the nice daily message on the Home Screen just makes the app feel soulless, and the nice friendly encouraging vibe of Emma was one of its USPs for me. The bar graphs in analytics arent great either, the previous design of a circle that filled up as you spent money was much clearer. The whole point of Emma for me was how clear all my finances were displayed in comparison to regular banking, where as now I may as well revert to using an excel sheet and inputting everything manually. A message to the developers, please please please bring back the old format, or at least give users an option to revert to it on their app. This app has been groundbreaking and life-changing for me, but if this update is the future of the app I will be very sad to leave.

Could you add more functionality into this section?

At the moment I have Pro and tapping this tab brings me to a list of features which I assume are specific to Pro and links to access them. However, its not apparent within this section what other tiers are available, what features are in those tiers, and how to switch. All that information would be useful.

Yes this is the biggest problem for me, it was so quick and easy before, I honestly opened it for fun to have a quick scan at my accounts and to enjoy the soft orange gradient graph.

I’ve found myself just going back to using my bank account apps now as it’s quicker.

A real shame.

Nods. I’m glad it’s not just me. It’s really peeved me to have to open every category to see all my accounts. Having one number for ‘Current’ is entirely useless to me since I have separate current accounts for bills and for spending so I need to see the separate figures.

I watched the graph every day - for fun, to see if I was starting to make progress.

The net worth page now has many more categories meaning it scrolls down and down to list loads of things I don’t even have - savings, investments blah blah and I can’t delete them. Just don’t show them to me there is no reason to scroll this page so far when there is nothing there.

It’s amazing how the colour change also affected me, the old gradient colours were so soothing. The thing I really hate the most though is that I have to start at the Feed, which for me is just a load of necessary cluttered spam messages I don’t care about.

I just don’t want the rubbish, I could bypass it before by just going to the money page so it didn’t matter so much but now I have to be annoyed about it every time I use the app.

I have been testing EMMA 3.0 and here are some of the requests I believe may help with the new users if they were added.

  1. Swiping accounts to see easy access between savings/investment/current

  2. Swipe/tap between budget and analytics for easy access example if i am in my transport budget tap a button to see my transport analytics.

  3. Return days until next payday

  4. The infuriating choice to use “over” and “left” next to the budgets category that tiny writing pisses me off I have to read each line rather than glance to see if I am in positive or negative please bring back the + / - calculations or let us change it in settings

  5. The colour scheme of the background the white of the boxes around cells and the white of the background are so similar in shade it looks terrible made the background a darker grey

  6. Custom colour schemes for accent colours

  7. Dark mode

  8. Pioneer an API for investment companies like freetrade or trading212 to use as a plugin

  9. Bigger and better coloured icons everything is too similar in shade

Some of which is in the works but a comprehensive update would be great

Very good point for no.4, it should be obvious at a glance whether the number is over or under. Could be a + or - or in red / green for example or the circle could over extend. Basically it needs to be done graphically.

No7. Yes, always, everything now needs to have dark mode!

No.3 For some reason I never really noticed this in the app before, instead I found a separate app which puts a widget on my home screen. If Emma could do this instead so I just use the one app that would be great.

Agggh what’s happened??? It’s totally confusing to navigate the app now. No though give to people with dyslexia or other issues, previous format was much easier to understand. Please change it back!

Pretty much everyone here is saying that the new design is less useful than what it was before - will you listen to that feedback and revert some of the changes?

Yes of course, we are happy to make some adjustments and feedback is always useful.
