If you are going to get into vehicles, then having insurance and MoT status (and renewal reminders) would be useful, as well as valuations others have mentioned.
Great Idea with MOT
Yeah I currently rely on the RAC app for these reminders but only because they have them. I would prefer to move to Emma - as an almost non-biased destination of all of my financial commitments.
Thinking about that insurance would be a great addition, a whole vehicle section for service, mot, insurance and tax would be so cool would be very unique. Definitely an opportunity to add this and put things like car transactions into maintenance cost for the car and have that in the vehicle tab.
Yes, please, this for Starling as well. It was going to be fixed “soon” 2 years ago, so not sure what has happened since.
I’d like a way to record holdings in shares and ETFs that aren’t in your platform to automatically update the value of investments, as it seems unlikely Vanguard will provide an API
Make this a toggle, it’s useful to have it both ways and it seems people are split fairly evenly on which they prefer.
Another issue with this is when subscriptions are not quite regular, e.g. I have a Pact subscription for coffee beans where I adjust the shipping date based on when I need more. I have currently have 5 subscriptions listed in Emma because it is trying to fit them onto different fortnightly/monthly/quarterly patterns.
It should do better at predicting credit card payments. Given that I always pay my balances in full, the predicted amount should be the balance of the linked account on the date when my statement was issued. If there was a field to set this up I could even tell you the statement date, but you could figure it out from comparing a few past payments to my account balance at different dates.
That reminds me about an issue with search: some of the filter selection lists in search are not in alphabetical order. Specifically, the merchants, tags, and account lists.
Could you make these ordered?
The account list appears to be partially ordered, but not entirely.
I think someone suggested to order them by use
I don’t like that approach personally; it makes it essentially useless for me as its too much effort to find a specific merchant or tag if the list isn’t alphabetized. But if its supposed to be ordered by use, that’s not happening either for me (either by total spend or number of transactions), at least not in the filter list for merchants.
Ordering by use in analytics makes sense to me.
It might be best if there was an option in setting to set order by use or alphabetical best of both worlds
I am the sole earner in my family. I give my wife credit cards with the same number but her name. It would be great if Emma could show how much each person is spending throughout the months and years. I know Amex shows my wifes name in their website so the data is there, but it doesn’t show on emma. That would be a fantastic feature for people that share credit cards. Personally i don’t use the stock stuff on emma i have a different app for that, I really like emma for my personal checking, budgeting and tracking.
Yes, this would be great!
It’s not something that we can fix like that since we use the data they sent us, but we can raise it with them.
The category list for split transactions is also in a messed up order.
Please can we also have favourite or most frequently used categories? Most of the time, I’m just recategorising between a few categories (eg Tesco: Groceries, Petrol, Alcohol, Pharmacy, Household Goods). But I have a looong list to scroll down.
I’d like to pin exclude at the top of the list as well
Perhaps having a smaller grid size or a proper list might be easier i think. Especially how big the icons are they could definitely be more w so you dont have to scroll either.
Also category icon images and colours could use a refresh they all look super similar and use only a small colour palette. More contrasting colours would be nicer
I’m new to Emma and been looking at many of the similar apps available. I have to say that Emma is hands down the best I’ve seen. There are two features missing that are stopping me from getting a Pro subscription,
- Dealing with transactions that are for yearly budgets within analytics and budgeting. Either by having an area that looks at yearly rather than monthly, or at least to stop these transactions / categories from skewing the monthly analysis by ‘hiding’ them. Holidays is one (plus others I’d like to create) that are not necessarily budgeted on a month to month, however I cannot stop these types of items from distorting the analysis.
- Bulk editing within search results. I’ve now spent a lot of time and effort sorting all my historical transactions into the free available categories. If I get a Pro subscription, I’d need to bulk edit by category to make it much less painful.
Apologies if these features are available and I’ve not worked it out yet or hopefully these will be added features soon.
You can already look at yearly by using the time period filter in analytics. But I guess what you really want is a way to exclude transactions from monthly analytics without excluding then from yearly analytics?
As a hack, if you had Pro you could create a custom yearly category for these types of transactions. This wouldn’t exclude them from your monthly analytics but at least would gather them together to enable you to do simple arithmetic in your head to work out your month spend independent of this.
A different approach to this problem (and this is what I do) is to estimate in advance how much you spend on annual payments, and every month pay 1/12 of this amount into savings account (or multiple savings accounts if you want one for each category of annual expense). Categorise the outgoing transaction from your current account as something other than “exclude” so that it’s treated as a spend. If the savings account is connected to Emma keep the incoming transaction into that account categorised as “exclude”. Then when it comes to actually spending the money (at time of annual spend) categorise any transfers from savings account to current account, and the actual spend as “exclude” transactions because you already accounted for the spend when you first moved the money into temporary savings. Whilst the cumulative amount you put into savings each month will never exactly match how much you actually spend on annual payments, I like this approach as it also helps with budgeting.
I think if emma could create a way that when a yearly transaction is coming up that category budget increases to accommodate as emma knows when these transactions are coming an intelligent or dynamic budget would be very cool.
None of the apps I’ve tried seem to deal well with yearly transactions / budgets, so I’m resigned to tracking these with a spreadsheet and use Emma to keep a tally of the category spend. As mentioned this is available by a search on the category for the year. This works fine for me.
What I would like to have as a feature is to exclude or ‘hide’ these catergories from the monthly analytics/budgets.
I tried to get around this by excluding the category from the budget, which is then under ‘Unbudgeted spend’ but is still counted against the months budget. Seems counter intuitive.
There are some users who have overcome this by splitting the yearly transaction and changing the date. It’s a bit “wild”, but we have seen it in customer support.
Would it be possible to remove the cap of 10 for splitting transactions? This would make budgeting annually easier as you could split a transaction into 12 for each month.
