Emma 3.0 Designs

That’s the category amount, it’s not indicating anything related to budgeting.

We can think of adding the category amount back, but I am not quite following why is that related to the budget?

Yes add it back for each category please, Apologies for my miscommunication.

Why does this help to budget?

It lets me see at a glance what is over budget and by how much as the number is over that categories budget. I dont have to read the small text and check it says over or under just look for the + / - sign across each category

At the minute apart from it saying over or under all the categories look the same no way to see easily if i spent too much in a category or just a visual indicator if i go over that category make the number in bold red and by how much. Something to easily highlight that i have gone over

In the screen you have shared (old design), + / - don’t indicate over budget, but what’s spent in the category and all the numbers in that column have a - sign since it’s spending, so I am a bit confused on how this can help budgeting?

Downloaded the latest update of 3.0 today and now the balances section at the top is showing the items listed alphabetically instead of based on which ones have an actual positive/negative number?

So it is hiding my Savings balance which I like to keep track of all the time, and instead it is showing me Debt £0.00 and Investments £0.00 which is not very helpful?

Yes yes and yes!
I also checked the graph every day, it was my favourite feature. I also agree about the colour palette, the app had so much more character before. Much more pleasant to look at. Also you’re totally right about the ‘current’ label, as for me it’s completely pointless to only be able to see the total sum of my money as I am a final year student (who is unfortunately very frequently in her overdraft). So it just looks like I constantly have negative funds :frowning: I know it’s technically true, but the previous layout of different account balances was much clearer as I have different accounts for different purposes.

I have also found that as a free member of the app, it feels like I can basically only use the first tab. And I can’t even use all of that. Because I loved the original app so much I was definitely going to join the paid membership once Ive graduated and have a bit more financial freedom, but the way the app is now it’s not a service I would want to pay for. :frowning:

It would just make it easy to identify which categories are over or under budget. The budget page is really frustrating without this.

I’m pretty sure the team is already looking at it, but the reviews on the App Store since the app has been updated are far from great…hopefully you’ll listen to the feedback that loyal users are providing and change things.

I think the real shame here is none of the changes were based on customer demand. @edoardomoreni I already tried to suggest previously you become customer-centric by using Canny or similar to collect feedback from real users.

Guessing or forcing changes that aren’t based on data or customer feedback seems like a gamble.

We actually monitor everything and this change was led by metrics. The design was A/B tested for over a month to see which ones was leading better numbers.

We are also happy to talk to users and improve many aspects of the app, but metrics are also useful.

Written customer feedback is also helpful and useful - we found lots of bugs from this thread and addressing some issues with the design.

In the next update, we are adding totals to search and making tags tappable again (they will open search).

The team is looking at budgeting, scaling and accessibility issues. We are also going to implement a way to switch between the sections once viewing one (like Cash).

Why do you need the total spent to identify over or left to spend? In the old design, you had total and in a very small number the budget number.

We can try to color over and left or figure out something.

This has only been out of beta for days. It’s definitely not perfect yet, but I think it’ll get there. Emma has always been very open about its metric-led approach, which leaves some people feeling their vision of the app isn’t supported. But ultimately Emma has to go with what’s viable…

Maybe I’m remembering incorrectly, but the overspent categories were in a striking colour, maybe red?

The current colour scheme makes it hard to spot at a glance where you’ve overspent…

Possibly changing the “left” figures to green and the “over” figures to red would work or something like that.

At the moment, it’s too easy to read a figure incorrectly as “left” instead of “over”

Further, as promised in our roadmap and open plans, we are adding a new tab in the next few days.
