Emma 3.0 Designs

The main decision we have taken is to have a tab per theme.

We now have Feed, Pay and Upgrade, and soon we’ll have Feed, Invest, Pay, Save and Upgrade.

The number of clicks doesn’t really change since in the old design we had one tap to accounts and one to analytics. It might be more “challenging” to check Cash and then Savings, but again, I think we can make the Cash screen swipe left or right to go to the next sections.

Accounts under “Debt” are not showing in descending £ order. The ordering of accounts appears random.

We fixed this, there should be an update coming to you in the next few hours. Thanks for reporting.

Will we be bringing back ‘days to payday’?

Yes, there is an update coming out now.

Yes, we want to make Feed the core of the original experience with all the accounts and analytics in one place. We also felt the need to separate Analytics from Budgeting, so that we can go deeper with extra features on top for both.

I love how responsive the Emma team is, but I really feel you need to poll your users on these things. How many people use the Pay feature compared to Analytics/Budgeting? I bet the majority feel like Analytics/Budgets are more important.

Some comments after a few days of use…

  • Unlike some others, I quite like that credit card accounts have been moved to the Debt grouping. But this is probably because I don’t enter any loans into Emma. So for me, the total Debt figure represents my total credit card debt, which is very useful to see as a summary figure on the feed. I think the only way to please everyone here would be to give us some control over what groups our accounts are assigned to and how many groups appear on the feed. Some might prefer to have more than 4 groups on the feed - e.g. current, savings, credit cards, loans, ISA, GIA, Crypto

  • One thing I’ve long wanted is a view where accounts are grouped by bank - not to replace account type grouping, but as a supplementary view. The new bank logins screen (which lists accounts imported, grouped by bank) is potentially a way to achieve this. I wonder if you could consider putting account balances next to the accounts in the bank logins screen? Also, potentially links to accounts.

  • I’m not keen on the pastellisation of the colour scheme. I liked the more abundant use of bold colurs in the previous version of the app to create contrast. But again, this is an area where it will never be possible to please everyone. Whilst I’m not keen on the change, it’s no big deal.

We are also working to:

  • bring back “days left to payday”
  • put totals in search
  • link tags with search

What we can do with the new analytics:

  • piechart that switches from cashflow
  • forecast
  • filter for any date
  • filter by account

What we can do with the new budget:

  • budget by merchant
  • budget by period and extend on this

Will we get the update automatically?

Yes, of course.

We are going to spend the next couple of weeks testing a bit more before rolling it out to everyone.

These colours seem completely random. Would it make sense to reserve red or a specific colour only for when you are over budget? (You can see 3 budgets are over in this example). It would be nice to “at a glance” be able to notice all the budgets that are over.

Yes, we are fixing this in the next update - an engineer is working on it.

Thinking a bit further about this…

I had forgotten that that tapping on net worth takes you to a longer list of account groupings. Having now looked at this, my refined suggestion would be to give us the option to star individual groupings listed within net worth and the user-starred groupings would then be the ones which appear in the feed. Day-to-day I’m mainly interested in my current accounts, credit cards, and savings so these would be the three that I would star for appearance on the feed.

As an aside, if Net Worth had been called “All accounts” I would have been more likely to tap it earlier.

Another thing that might be worth considering is custom balances. I envisage this as giving users the ability to setup simple formulas that combine multiple groupings e.g. current minus credit. These custom balances could then be starred (in the same way as account groupings) by users who want them on the feed. Perhaps this is a bit too similar to the idea of spaces, although I don’t know how spaces will interact with the feed when it is introduced.

Love it! Thank you :slightly_smiling_face:

Sounds like this could just be solved with some nice onboarding steps for new users.

We can definitely test this

Swiping has been lost in analytics. Eg if I open a category for this month, I’m sure I used to be able to switch between months within the category (at least with tapping?), whereas now I need to go back or and select the month. Makes month on month comparison tricky!
