Can you switch to Chrome?

We are also working to include a QR scanner in the Emma app settings to facilitate this for Android customers. We are aware Android doesn’t have the best support for QR scanning + redirecting.

At this point, if you have a QR scanner and chrome as a default, it should work and redirect you to the Emma app.

Thanks for all your efforts in bringing this into Beta. As a YNAB user, I’m running Emma in parallel to evaluate before my YNAB sub expires at the end of the year.

I’ve scanned the QR code and opened in Chrome, but I just get redirected to a bizarre Chrome error - it doesn’t seem to recognise the emma://web-sign-in? redirect. I have signed up for Beta.

Have now set my default browser to Chrome and regular links are now opening in Chrome. But my camera app is still opening the QR code link in DuckDuckGo for some reason. But that’s an Android issue I guess.

That would be good.

Yes, we are aware Android devices might be a bit funny.

I have a Samsung Galaxy and there are no issues; we are going to prioritise the QR code scanner asap.

Maybe in the past, but I’ve never had an issue with QR scanning on any mainstream Android device over the last few years.

I’ve a QR scanner, built into the device (Pixel 8 Pro), Chrome as the default browser, latest version of the Emma app and a member of the beta program. Scanning the QR code launches Chrome but immediately reverts back to Google Assistant because it doesn’t seem to recognise that Emma is the default app for an “Emma://web” query.

Can you try to scan the QR code wit this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamma.scan&hl=en_GB?

Looking forward to Desktop version functionality progressing over the next few weeks. Net worth, pensions, adding/editing transactions etc. All in due time!

Feedback - Using iPhone I had no issues with the QR code though

Yes, this is V2 - we are already working on it.

We’ll release day by day to speed it up.

Just tried and it works for me using this scanner!
Google Pixel; Android 14; default browser = DuckDuckGo.

Great!

I have prioritised the work for an Emma built-in scanner in the Settings, so you don’t need to use a third party app. For iPhone, there are no issues reported.

We know it’s very minimal, but if you want to drop some feedback that would be great.

Once logged in everything seems to be displaying and working fine. I notice I can’t edit transaction notes or categories, but I assume you just haven’t added this functionality yet. I particularly like that you can access chat support from the web version. I’ve always found it a bit awkward to use the chat support built into the app since it forces you to navigate away from the part of the app that you might be trying to get help with.

Couple of questions/suggestion:

At the moment the web version seems to be basically a clone of the mobile version. Will it be developed to take advantage of the extra screen space? One aspect of the mobile app that I don’t like is the line charts don’t include numbers on the axes. I assume you do this so the graphics don’t look cluttered. But this shouldn’t be an issue for the charts on the web version.

Another limitation of mobile app is you can’t view more than one screen/pages at the same. With the web app you can. This might be useful for example if you want to see transactions from two accounts side-by-side. However to achieve this at the moment you have to open the web app link in different tabs/windows and then browse to the section you are interested in. It would be good if you could right click links within the Emma web interface to open that link in new tab. This doesn’t seem to be possible at the moment.

We need a couple of weeks for this.

We have used the same process as iPad and tried to expand what we currently have to speed up development. I believe most of the screens will stay the same apart from some very specific ones that can leverage a bigger real estate.

For example, a stock page can look much better on the web.

We can check this!

Are you able to provide any info on why this is necessary?

I’m nervous about installing random apps for things my Android phone does by default - in particular some Barcode/QR scanning apps have been responsible for malware delivery in the past. That’s especially true when I’m planning to use them for authenticating services with access to my financial data.

My understanding is that as long as the Emma app registers a custom intent filter then it should be asked to handle these types of URIs - but it doesn’t currently appear in the list of options. I have check I have the latest Emma update installed from the Play Store (v1.22.8) and rebooted device.

Hi @asdf,

there are some android phones that are not able to either scan the QR code via the default camera app or manage the deep link.

For this reason, we are building our own QR code scanner which will be available in the Settings of the app in the next few weeks.

At this point, the QR code scanner we have put in the post above seems to work; even if there was a malware installed, it wouldn’t be able to do anything related to your login with Emma.

The link redirects you to the app where you need to authenticate with 2FA to the approve access to the web; that’s it.

Thanks for the reply @edoardomoreni - I was curious about this bit:

some android phones that are not able to […] manage the deep link

I confirmed that this appears to be a limitation of the Pixel camera handling of QR codes. Selecting one of the presented options (a web browser) generally searches for the provided string in the default search engine, which obviously doesn’t work. However copying this string and then navigating to it in the address bar rather than searching for it will open the Emma app as expected and authorise the web client so mine is now working. This is a clunky workaround though.

There’s a thread on the Pixel community asking about this behaviour so will follow there to see if it’s a known issue. Just thought I’d share what I found.

Glad to hear you’re looking into embedding a QR scanner in the app, likely a more reliable solution. Or alternatively using a suitable HTTPS URL that the app is registered to handle may work too? (e.g. https://emma-app.com/web-auth?client-d=abc123)

Android user here.

No issue scanning QR code. It opened the app but then that was it. Logged in, nothing happened :man_shrugging:t4:

Forget this. It’s working

Yes,

the camera app works completely fine on my Samsung Galaxy.

For anyone on android, you can also use the default QR scanner app - this will work too.

To give everyone a general update

  • V1 - it’s what you see today
  • V2 - it should be available by the end of August - we’ll be rolling out this step by step and it’ll introduce anything you can edit in the Feed apart from Spaces. We have already implemented the Settings of the app and the notifications preferences for example.
  • V3 - the other tabs, premium plans management and spaces; this will be available by the end of September/October
