IG Group acquires Freetrade

Hey guys,

has anyone seen the news? Any crowdfunding investors here?

Here’s IG press release: Acquisition of Freetrade | IG Group

“IG Group Holdings plc (“IG”, “the Group”) is pleased to announce the acquisition of Freetrade, the fast-growing, commission-free, self-directed investment platform, for £160 million. The transaction will strengthen IG’s UK trading and investments offering and provide access to new customer segments and capabilities.”

I saw on Twitter a lot of investors ended up losing money, is this true?

Yes… why do you ask?

I understand some early ones have at least made a profit compared to late stage crowdfunding investors? Has crowdcube sent anything yet?

Nothing from Crowdcube.

IG announced it in a RNS and have a detailed page on the Acquisition of Freetrade.

Freetrade emailed but since have hardly engaged with the Community apart from this

Talking of Crowdcube, I’ve not had an update about EMMA in a very long time. How’s it going?

“Create the future of freetrade” haha

You couldn’t make this up.

Freetrade has always been borderline BS

Freetrade changed the UK investment landscape and there was a point where they were it… can’t take that away from them but yes it’s been borderline recently.

I think they had to charge more to start with; free stuff doesn’t work if you can’t make money on pof and offer other ways to invest (options/cfds…).

Shame they haven’t posted anything since, especially after all the frustrations posted.
Lifetime free sub :joy: for investors would be a nice gesture

Circling back on the point that free stuff doesn’t work.

I invested in one of the early rounds, so I’ve made a profit. However I didn’t really understand until now the implication of investing alongside institutional investors who have preference shares. In particular how those investors are prioritised following a sale before crowdfunding investors get any exposure to the proceeds of the sale. Furthermore I’m pretty sure those types of investors only came in during later rounds. Has put me off making future crowdfunding investments.
