I have been using an amex for a year. I like it.

Me too, except that the pending transactions don’t update your Amex balance immediately - I wish the balance in the Amex app (and in Emma!) would take pending into account.
(All in all, though, I must say I’ve been quite impressed at how “fintechy” they feel)
Is Amex a credit card? I’ve been told it is very unlikely indeed that I will ever return to work so again probably not much point in me looking
American Express is the Creme de la Creme of credit cards - rewards and all that jazz will be the best you can get in the UK

Most American Express cards are credit cards (at least in the UK). But some are charge cards, which are slightly different
