I’ve an avid personal finance person as of the last year. We found an electronic envelope app after taking Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University 8-week class, and started cranking away on our budget and financial goals. Along the way, I discovered ChooseFI and the FIRE movement (Financial Independence and Retire Early). Not sure how early “early retirement” will be, but we’re living on half of our income now, investing the rest.
One of the things that budgeting has really helped us do is learn to appreciate how much we have. We use more of the things we already own and really resist buying new things. Biking, kayaking, and various games (card games, deck building games, tabletop games) and doing many of these things with our friends. As we already own what we need to do these things, they cost us nothing. We’re always looking for ways to be more frugal, but still have an enjoyable time!
